Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have commenced mobilisation for protests scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The decision followed resolutions reached at a student congress held on campus on Monday over the worsening transportation crisis.
According to a statement issued by the leadership of the Students’ Union, announcements and sensitisation commenced across the halls of residence immediately after the congress, which resolved to hold a peaceful demonstration to vent students’ concerns.
The congress resolved: “That the Students’ Union stage a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, 28th April 2026, at 6 a.m., with the intention to block major roads and gates leading to the campus until our demands are met. Sensitisation across all halls of residence shall be done immediately after the adjournment of the congress.”
“That the union leadership shall lead the demonstration and ensure proper coordination for its success. That the demonstration shall be conducted peacefully and in line with the known tradition of Great Ife students for orderly and non-violent protests, with adequate sensitisation of the student populace.
“That all congress members and students are urged to participate actively and responsibly in the planned peaceful demonstration,” the statement, signed by the union’s President, Adelani Oluwatodimu, and Secretary-General, Habeeb Isa, read.
The transport crisis on the campus began after the university management commenced the use of fewer than 100 CNG vehicles donated to the school by the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and subsequently banned numerous pre-existing buses and bikes.
For weeks, students have struggled to get into the campus with the limited number of CNG buses, with several videos showing students stranded at the campus gate and bus stops within the campus. Many students have also been seen trekking long distances on the campus.
The management has defended the new transport policy, insisting the queues are normal and citing Lagos and foreign transport systems.
