The Ogun State Police Command said on Saturday that it would recall Abigeal Nsikak, popularly known as Mirabel, from the custody of the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development when needed.

The police are investigating the alleged rape incident involving Mirabel who, in February, accused a yet-to-be-identified person of sexually assaulting her in her apartment.

Mirabel attempted suicide in February after narrating how she was raped by a stranger who broke into her apartment and later sent her messages saying, “my father has the money to bury the case before it gets to court”.

She narrated the ordeal in a video that went viral on social media which sparked outrage.

However, there were further speculations days after the incident that the alleged rape story may have been fabricated.

The state police had announced on February 25 that they had handed Mirabel over to the Ministry of Women Affairs, but had not given any update on investigations since then.

While responding to inquiries from Third Lens over the matter, the Public Relations Officer for the command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the investigation is still ongoing, and Mirabel could be recalled from the ministry when needed.

He insisted that investigations have no timeframe when asked for a possible period an update could be expected.

“Investigation is ongoing as we told you. She was released to the Ministry of Women Affairs.

“When we need her, we will get her back. The update remains the same. Investigation doesn’t have a time frame,” the PPRO told Third Lens in a telephone interview.

More background

In a video that went viral across social media platforms in February, Mirabel narrated how a stranger raped her after breaking into her apartment.

She said tearfully, “I got raped yesterday in my apartment, February 15, in the morning. I have insomnia; if I’m not drunk or high, I can’t sleep. So that Saturday, I drank, and it wasn’t working. I needed to be high enough so I could sleep. My eyes were tired, but I couldn’t sleep. I slept around 6 am,” she said in the video.

“Around 9 am, I heard knocking on my door. I thought maybe it was one of my neighbours, because it was Sunday morning and most of them must have gone to church. Maybe one of them wanted to ask for something.

“Immediately I opened the door, I got pushed back. Before my door, there is my fridge, and a few steps forward, there is my door. I hit my head on the door because I got pushed back. I hit my head on the fridge, and I passed out.

“When I opened my eyes, there was a man over me. There was cloth stuffed in my mouth and tied. I was just there, mumbling, hoping somebody could hear me.

“When I felt like it had been over 20 minutes, I was just shaking and mumbling because there was nothing I could do. I didn’t even know this person to begin with.

“Later on, he left, and I was bleeding. I didn’t know why I was bleeding. I thought I got my period.

“But today, the person texted me. It turned out this person inserted a fist blade inside my vagina and cut me until I could bleed. He said he was trying to stimulate himself, him being the first person I could sleep with. He sent me a text. I don’t want to put it out, but I’ll post it after this video.

“I’m so sorry. I can’t keep up with everything. I don’t even know how to react. I went to my friend’s place. I left home, and I told my friend to come pick me up. I’m not very okay. Everything is happening to me, and I’ve been suicidal from the start. I can’t keep up anymore. I can’t hold it anymore.”
