Despite the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union and National Association of Academic Technologists, the Lagos State University is expected to commence its 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremonies on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The ceremonies are for graduands of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions and are scheduled to run until Sunday, August 23.
The development comes after the three unions at LASU resolved to withdraw their services over demands including the payment of a N50,000 palliative to Lagos State workers and implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and university-based unions.
In a notice in early August 2026, and signed by the secretaries of ASUU-LASU, NASU-LASU and NAAT-LASU, the unions said the decision followed a joint congressional meeting held at the MBA Hall.
The statement said the outcome of a meeting between the unions and representatives of the Lagos State Government was presented to members, who subsequently deliberated on the next line of action.
“After intensive deliberations, the joint congress of the three unions resolved to withdraw their services until the following demands are met by the State Government,” the unions said.
Among the demands are payment of the N50,000 palliative, provision of Macopollo buses reportedly promised by the state governor, payment of the 20 per cent salary increase promised by the governor after the 2023 governorship election, and implementation of the FG/ASUU/SSANU/NASU/NAAT 2025 Agreement.
The unions directed members to comply with the decision, saying their services would remain withdrawn until the demands were met.
Meanwhile, LASU management has continued preparations for the combined convocation, which is expected to begin with a press conference on Wednesday.
The programme includes the award of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees to graduands from the two academic sessions.
The university has also advised graduands to complete their clearance processes ahead of the ceremonies to facilitate the collection of their certificates.
The industrial action has also affected the Lagos State University of Science and Technology.
In a notice dated August 3, 2026, the Joint Action Committee of NASU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and NAAT at LASUSTECH directed members to withdraw their services with immediate effect.
The unions said the decision was reached at a joint congressional meeting and directed members to “remain guided by further directives from the leadership of the respective Unions.”
The simultaneous industrial actions in the state-owned universities have cast uncertainty over some academic and administrative activities as LASU approaches its scheduled convocation ceremonies.
