Lecturers and journalists on Thursday sensitised students to media practice, language and communications at the Lagos State University, Ojo.
The 2025/2026 YOU 108 media workshop was organised by the Department of Linguistics, African Languages and Communication Arts under the leadership of the Head of the Department, Dr (Mrs) Titilayo Onadipe-Shalom.
The event was declared open by the Director, Centre for Yoruba Studies, Professor Ahmed Adesanya, while the programme was moderated by Mr Tobi Lawal, a lecturer in the department.
While speaking, one of the guest speakers, Dr Ganiu Bamgbose, who spoke on ‘Language as a Strategic Tool in Public and Media Communication,’ sensitised the students on the positive use of language, emphasising its role in public communication.
Dr GAB, a lecturer at the university, highlighted the nexus between language and culture, taking the students through lived experiences on campus and in the larger society.
While speaking, the Co-Editor at Third Lens, Gbenga Oloniniran, discussed the role of the media in national development and narrative building in society.
Oloniniran, who is a journalist, touched on media practice and shaping informed discourse on national issues.
According to him, the media must continue to play its role in the publication of information that contributes to the safeguarding of lives, promotes democracy and improves the general quality of life.
“From digital media to traditional media, the press remains an important platform in strengthening national development. It also serves as a watchdog in society as the media holds authorities accountable and generally promotes literacy and democracy while keeping people informed.
“Therefore, the role of the media in shaping narratives cannot be overemphasised,” Oloniniran said.
On his part, a lecturer and media consultant, Lawal Muhammed, highlighted ‘Career Opportunities and Professional Pathways for Media and Communication Students.’
Lawal, who relived his experience as a journalist at PUNCH Newspapers, urged the students to keep their minds open to the various opportunities in the media, ranging from journalism to public relations, social media influencing and content creation, among others.
The event wrapped up with a question-and-answer session where the students engaged the speakers on critical issues around media practice, language and career opportunities.
Also in attendance was Dr Olabode Abimbola, a lecturer at the university, who delivered the closing remarks.
