The Medical Director/CEO, Randle General Hospital, Dr. Lateefat Omolara Agbaje, has commended a former student Midwife of the hospital, Mariam Afinowi, for returning to the institution after completing her training to make a meaningful contribution through the donation of a new Cardiotocography (CTG) Machine and several Fetal Dopplers.
Dr. Agbaje explained at the event held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, that the intention of the donated items to the Maternal and Child Centre (MCC) Gbaja, Surulere, was to strengthen maternal and newborn care.
She described the gesture as a remarkable demonstration of gratitude, professional commitment, and the enduring impact of quality clinical training and mentorship.
She noted that it was very encouraging to see a former student return, not only as a qualified Midwife, but as a professional committed to giving back to the institution where part of her learning journey took place.
According to the Medical Director, the items will further support the hospital’s maternity team in monitoring fetal well-being and making timely clinical decisions.
She emphasised that partnerships and individual acts of generosity, such as this, complement the efforts of healthcare professionals and contribute to the continuous strengthening of healthcare delivery.
The CEO further noted that the hospital remains committed to providing an enabling environment for learning, professional development, and quality patient care. She equally expressed optimism that Afinowi’s gesture would inspire others to contribute to the advancement of healthcare.
Afinowi completed an elective placement at Randle General Hospital as a third-year student midwife last year.
She said the experience gained has left a lasting impression and ultimately inspired her to undertake fundraising efforts to procure equipment for the maternity unit, just as she described the occasion as both a personal and professional milestone.
“Last year, I came to this hospital as a third-year student Midwife, eager to learn, eager to experience maternity care in a different setting, and excited to be able to contribute in whatever small way I could. I left with so much more than I expected. I gained experience, perspective, and memories that have stayed with me,” she said.
The Donor also expressed appreciation for the commitment and compassion demonstrated by the hospital’s maternity team during her placement.
In her words, “Today, I am incredibly proud to return, not as a student, but as a qualified midwife, to give something back to a place that gave me so much. My grandparents taught me that giving back doesn’t have to be one particular way. We all have different gifts, different opportunities, and different ways in which we can make a difference. For me, that way is through midwifery.”
On her profession, the midwife stated, “I am a girl who genuinely loves my job. I love looking after women. I love caring for babies. I feel incredibly fortunate that the career I have chosen allows me to serve others.”
She explained that fetal monitoring plays an important role in maternity care, helping healthcare professionals recognise when a baby may require additional support and enabling timely decisions to be made for both mother and baby.
Afinowi also offered to support a training session for relevant maternity staff on the use of the donated equipment, where considered necessary, to ensure that the equipment is used confidently and to its full capacity.
On her return to Randle General Hospital, she said, “I am incredibly grateful to have been welcomed here as a student last year, and I am even more grateful to be able to return today and give something back. It is a privilege to be able to give back to a place that was once part of my learning journey, and hopefully, in some small way, to contribute to the learning and care of those who come after me,” she concluded.
